Creating ECVI-DHH Units
Choosing the Units and the Books:
Thematic vocabulary units should be chosen according to the grade level science or social studies standards for students. Examples of Arizona common core standards can be found at the following websites:
- Science: http://www.azed.gov/standards-practices/academic-standards/science-standard/
- Social Studies: http://www.azed.gov/standards-practices/academic-standards/social-studies-standard/
In addition to an appropriate theme, unit books should be chosen based on the student’s instructional (not independent) reading level. Although it is important that students be exposed to print, the purpose of this intervention is to increase the student’s general vocabulary not reading vocabulary. A large general vocabulary assists students with reading comprehension.
For each unit, one expository and one narrative book should be chosen. However, if a narrative book cannot be found, select two expository books. Unit books should be interesting and engaging.
