Extension Activities
Purpose:
The purpose of extension activities is to give students opportunities to use the target words and definitions during interesting, engaging, and contextualized activities. Do not use extension activities to assess student knowledge. There are two types of extension activities:
- Drill and Practice: designed for the student to practice the vocabulary words and definitions.
- Conceptual: designed to give the student opportunities to understand and use the target words in an activity related to the unit theme. During the conceptual extension activity, the teacher should expand on students’ language and vocabulary in a natural, but purposeful way.
Preparation:
Because extension activities are so different from one another, we cannot provide a standard way of conducting these. Instead, you will find examples and more specific directions for extension activities within each unit of instruction.
Procedures:
You will find examples and more specific directions for each activity within each unit of instruction.
