Conceptual Activities
Conceptual Activities:
- Conceptual activities are designed to give the student opportunities to understand and use the target words in an activity related to the unit theme.
- During the conceptual extension activity, the teacher should expand on students’ language and vocabulary in a natural, but purposeful way.
- Example of a conceptual activities are:
- Arts and Crafts: for example, for a Weather unit create a weather scene
- Science Experiments: for example for an Ocean unit compare salt water and tap.
- Role Playing: for example, for Dental Health role play dentist and patient

- Use strategies for conversation
- Open-ended questions or “tell me” statements
- Contributions
- Acknowledgements
- Recasts
- Expansions
- Encourage and/or reinforce student use of target words.
